Paper 4: F. Paynter - (Queen Mary, U. of London) Adapting suburbs: the impacts of culture-led regeneration on English suburban towns    paper 5 ››

Culture-led regeneration strategies are rapidly being implemented by suburban towns following the success of some city centres and owing to the need to rebrand and diversify their high streets in order to compete with other towns. However, such strategies also bring about many distinctively suburban opportunities and obstacles. This paper will address the specifically suburban experience of culture-led regeneration and the impacts of regeneration on local people and suburban landscapes. It will do so by focusing on the culture-led regeneration strategies of three English suburban towns; Bury, Croydon and West Bromwich within the context of broader policy debates about suburban regeneration. Researching cultural and public suburban spaces will not only broaden understandings of the multiple and distinctive environments of English suburbs but will also inform suburban policies in the future.
